No matter if you’re part of a Trust, Federation, or Local Authority, we all share a common goal: enhancing the educational outcomes for the children in our schools and academies.
But how do we achieve this? Should we focus on individual cases, empowering our headteachers to drive change within their school and local area at arms length – or should we take a more hands on approach, directing the change ourselves?
Or is there a way we can deep dive together – empowering headteachers and unlocking benefits not just in individual schools but across the entire Trust, Federation or Local Authority.

Question Level Analysis is the Key
Question Level Analysis (QLA) can be the key to achieving these goals. By analysing your assessment data in detail, you can identify small, incremental improvements that collectively lead to significant progress. This detailed examination helps in pinpointing specific areas where students need support, enabling targeted interventions to address learning gaps.
The real strength of QLA lies in its ability to guide evidence-based decision-making. By identifying small, marginal gains, schools can implement focused strategies that lead to significant improvements over time. When these insights are integrated into improvement plans, they can enhance teaching effectiveness and student outcomes across the entire school.
Here’s how QLA can drive better outcomes:
- Detailed Assessment: Determine which topics students excel in and where they struggle. For example, if many students perform well in reading but poorly in math, you can focus on improving math instruction. You can then set specific and achievable targets for improvement in this area – implementing the 1% principle in your school.
- Curriculum Adjustments: Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching methods and make informed decisions about curriculum changes. Consistent gaps across a cohort may indicate areas where teaching strategies need adjustment. You can use the evidence here to find areas where you can make changes that could make a substantial difference.
- Targeted Interventions: By understanding the specific areas where students face difficulties, educators can design targeted interventions to address these gaps. For example, if a significant number of students are struggling with fractions, a focused workshop can be organized.
- Continuous Improvement: Regularly analysing question-level data allows for continuous improvement in teaching methods and curriculum design. This iterative process ensures that educational strategies remain effective and responsive to student needs. Incorporating the 1% principle into your school development planning can lead to remarkable improvements over time. This approach focuses on making small, consistent changes that compound to create significant results.
- Professional Development: Providing teachers with insights from QLA can guide their professional development, helping them to focus on areas where they can improve their instructional techniques – fostering a culture of continuous learning.
By integrating QLA into your approach, you can create a dynamic and effective educational system that not only addresses individual needs but also promotes overall school improvement.
By embracing the 1% Principle embedded within QLA, schools can create a culture of continuous improvement, where every small step contributes to significant, long-term success. These small changes can help create a more dynamic, supportive, and efficient school environment.

Can we prove this approach works?

Wirral Council has been collaborating with us since 2023. We provided detailed analyses of KS2 SATs Results and our Year 6 Maths Baseline for a large number of their schools as part of a deep dive into Mathematics Outcomes. Besides the school-level reports, Wirral also received summary reports at the Local Authority level.
The PDF reports empowered school improvement officers to take a proactive approach in addressing key areas across their schools. Headteachers are now working together to discuss the data and use evidence to enhance their curriculum. This collaborative effort is fostering a data-driven culture, leading to more informed decisions and targeted improvements in teaching and learning.
“Mark, Shaun and the team at DAISI have provided us with the in-depth information required to really drill down and discover what needs to be done to improve mathematics outcomes.
Not only has their diagnostic information enabled us to identify specific strengths and weaknesses, it has also enabled us to flag up key pupil cohort achievement. As a result, leaders are adapting the taught curriculum to ensure any gaps in knowledge are being effectively addressed.
I would recommend the DAISI analysis package to anybody who really wants to understand what their assessment information is truly telling them.”
John Tomlinson, Senior School Advisor – School Effectiveness, Wirral Council
