INTENT

Curriculum Planning – Department Level

Your new Year 7 pupils have already taken six standardised tests in May. What not use them?

You can get the analysis from these tests before your pupils have set foot in your school. If you choose, you can then supplement them with additional in-house tests – but in the meantime, you already can be acting on the results of the Transition QLA.

For better or worse, your Year 7 SATs results are the baseline for your Progress 8 scores in five years’ time.

Having an early analysis allowing you to secure some rapid improvement and quick wins with your new mixed-ability cohort is a positive boost for pupils and teachers alike.

DAISI’s Transition Pack allows you to see a full overview of your school’s results allowing you to focus in as a department on specific areas for intervention.

This page from our Summary Analysis Pack shows the strengths and weaknesses for the full school cohort across all three papers in bespoke topics and how they compares with the National averages.

In this example, it shows that:

  • the school needs to focus on “Spelling” in GPS,
  • and the Mathematics department need to focus across all areas to cover the learning gaps.

This whole school approach has proved really successful in Primary Schools with many using the analysis to boost attainment the following year.

“I think they are a great tool and really help us to analyse our data in great detail. I have been telling everyone how good they are & how they have saved hours of work. This has allowed me to focus on how we can improve teaching and learning rather than spending time on the data analysis – a very welcome change.”

Headteacher, Captain Cook Primary School, Middlesbrough

“In my role as deputy headteacher of a big school as well as assessment coordinator, there is no way I have the time or capacity to complete QLA to the level & in the detail that the DAISI team do. They save me days of work & the information this gives me allows us to develop whole school targets that we can show improve the attainment of our pupils.”

Deputy Headteacher, Seely Primary & Nursery School, Nottingham

“In regards to the QLA as we have such a large cohort – it is good to look for areas/types of questions where children have struggled and we need to focus on further in the future. The QLA for each individual child is useful when looking at specific children within groups SEN, FSM, PP looking particularly at their individual progress in each subject.”

Headteacher, Fernwood Primary School, Wollaton

IMPLEMENTATION

Classroom Teaching

Teachers at the heart of the Analysis

Additionally, at some schools, all teachers are responsible for improvement in the core subjects of Maths and English, no matter what subject they teach. They can use the Transition QLA to be informed of the topic strengths and weaknesses, at either the pupil level or at a class level. This can help pupils to either catch up or to excel at the highest levels.

Topic – based targeted intervention from the start of Year 7

For maths, some schools were able to split their pupils into various topic-based groups, to ensure that pupils had targeted support as early as possible, and made real progress in the first half of the Autumn term. This enabled learning gaps to be closed for all pupils, and to enable pupils the best chance to fully access the Key Stage 3 curriculum.

Year 7 Catch up Premium

Other schools talked about the Year 7 catch-up premium and targeting these additional funds, as well as reporting on the impact that it had. It can also be used for targeted support for disadvantaged pupils and other groups as well.

DAISI’s Transition Pack allows you to see a class specific view of your school’s results allowing you to focus in even more specifically on intervention.

The Topic Analysis is designed to help Teachers create their bespoke lesson plans and help to close the learning gaps right at the start of the year.

This page from our Maths Class Analysis Pack shows the strengths and weaknesses for all pupils, boys and girls, and how it compares with the Entire Year and the National averages.

In this example, it shows that:

  • girls did particularly well in “Ratio and proportion” and boys not so well, whilst
  • boys did well in the first 4 topics, with girls not doing so well.

The Question Analysis is designed to help teachers understand this data clearer. What types of question did pupils understand or need work on?

This second page is from our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling report within the English Transition Pack.

It shows the top 10 questions which are most above or below the National average, so you can see the types of questions that your pupils found difficult or easier than average. It compares your class results against the entire Year 7, and against National.

Behind your Statistics lies their Potential
