One of the most popular sports across the world at the moment is Formula One.

Here a matter of millimetres or milliseconds can make the difference between finishing first or last. Aerodynamics are checked constantly for any extra speed, the cars are fine-tuned with the latest data to make them go faster and faster. All parts will be updated at a cost of millions of pounds if it means the car will go a simple second quicker.

“Data is becoming increasingly important – not just in the world of Formula One, but the world in general. In F1, we use our data on our relentless search for performance, across all functions of the team – both at the track and at the factory,”

Even the driving styles of each driver is manipulated with guidance from the computers for every corner – what line to take, when to brake, how much to brake. Every lap is important and the smallest change could make the biggest difference.

As Lewis Hamilton, possibly the greatest racing driver of all time, has said

In racing there are always things you can learn, every single day. There is always space for improvement, and I think that applies to everything in life.”

Knowledge is valuable and the analysis of this knowledge creates the pathway for change.

Everyone in sport or business asks the same questions…

  • How do we get better?
  • How can we improve our processes?
  • How can we make a little change to make a huge difference?

Sir James Dyson is now worldwide known for his vacuum cleaners. Every one has taken years to perfect with every single part patented for the maximum efficiency and power. At first no-one took him seriously. It took him more than more than five years and thousands of failed attempts to perfect his invention.

I made 5,127 prototypes of my vacuum before I got it right but I learned from each one. That’s how I came up with a solution.

James Dyson

Every time he looked at his invention in detail – analysing the outcomes in the smallest data. Every little part of your hoover has been patented and changed many times within the design team back at the factory in Wiltshire.

“Risk aversion is a hapless approach for a company that’s hoping to develop new technology. It’s tempting in a downturn. But long-term research and development, expensive and often filled with failure as it is, is the only route to discovering it. By taking the cautious path, companies risk a drought of ideas.”

Knowledge was gained and the analysis of this knowledge created the pathway for change.

Everyone in schools and education also asks the same questions…

  • How do we improve outcomes?
  • How can we improve our curriculum?
  • How can we make a little change to make a huge difference?

Question Level Analysis

Question Level Analysis breaks that assessment data down into meaningful insight that teachers, pupils and parents can all use to make a real difference. It enables teaching staff to look in detail at their school results and notice the pattern or trends that can make a difference. This could be a certain topic or subject that requires more investment or a wider issue that needs addressing across the whole school.

How Question Level Analysis helped one School

One inner city Nottingham school was rated “requires improvement” in 2016 and then began to use our QLA to help.

“We struggled historically with reading results at the end of KS2 and have used DAISI Question Level Analysis to drill down into the reasons why reading was significantly lower than maths.

Using QLA we found that the issues were EAL pupils struggling with vocabulary -we introduced word of the week, then realising we needed more, word of the day. We also put on additional pre teaching sessions with an EAL teacher.

We also identified that inference was a massive problem and we made it our whole school target, had loads of CPD and this made a massive difference.

In 2016, our reading EXP was 54%. In 2017, it was 68%.

In 2018, it was 79%.

We also identified that girls were impacting on our combined result by passing all their English subjects but not maths.

A quick look at our QLA found that our girls weren’t great at arithmetic so lunchtime arithmetic sessions were introduced and there is no longer a boy/girl gap in maths.

All down to the Question Level Analysis

Deputy Headteacher and Assessment Co-ordinator

The school was inspected again in 2019 receiving a “good” with the Ofsted report noting…

Good-quality teaching and the effective use of assessment have led to a trend of improvement in pupils’ attainment in reading, writing and mathematics and a range of other subjects. All groups of pupils make good progress from their varied starting points. The curriculum is suitably modified to meet the learning needs of the most able pupils, and also of those who find learning more difficult. Disadvantaged pupils achieve well. Those who speak English as an additional language soon grow in confidence in their spoken and written English.

Regarding the Question Level Analysis from DAISI Education, the school commented:

“In my role as deputy headteacher of a big school as well as assessment coordinator, there is no way I would have the time or capacity to complete QLA to the level and in the detail that the DAISI team do. They save me days of work and the information this gives me allows us to develop whole school targets that we can show improve the attainment of our pupils.”

By searching for smaller changes, you can create larger outcomes.

The Potential of Analysis in your School

This process of analysing data for small changes has been called many things from “marginal gains” to deep analysis but the process remains the same in all three examples. In both sport (F1) and business (Dyson), Analysis makes a huge difference in the development of the finished “product” or outcome.

Why can’t we do we the same in education? After all, we are all aiming for the same.. the best outcome for our pupils. Question Level Analysis has been proven to help improve school attainment over time but it does more than that..

Question Level Analysis

  • By looking at individual pupils in detail – you can create purpose built intervention programmes or develop an in-built transition programme between phases of education.

“QLA provides key topic evaluation to prioritise areas of focus in the catch up sessions enabling more targeted and focused intervention to take place.“

Deepings School, Peterborough (Anthem Schools Trust) (Secondary)
  • By looking at your school cohorts in detail – you can refine your curriculum to work for all pupils not just the most able or larger “on track” groups.

“Really useful. Helped with the bigger picture allowing me to really home in on specific groups, groups within groups and the specific areas which we need to address.”

Headteacher, Stoke Bishop CE Primary School, Bristol
  • It can guide school decisions when targeting resources, or even when creating a new curriculum – giving valuable instructions for the future by looking at the gaps from the past.

We have found the reports to be incredibly useful & they are helping us to shape our school improvement priorities for the coming year.”

Peterborough Keys Academy Trust
  • By looking at how individual pupils performed through the year, you can see exactly where you will want to make changes for later or even the next.

“Thankyou! We have found the reports very useful – not only for identifying weakness in particular groups in the cohort – but to think about changes we might need to make to Year 6 this year.”

Headteacher – Kirkburton Middle School, Huddersfield (The Mast Academy Trust)

Plus, by getting someone else to create the analysis for you, it can also save you valuable time.

“I think the QLA are a great tool and really help us to analyse our data in great detail. I have been telling everyone how good they are & how they have saved hours of work. This has allowed me to focus on how we can improve teaching and learning rather than spending time on the data analysis – a very welcome change.”

Headteacher, Captain Cook Primary School, Middlesbrough (James Cook Learning Trust)

By searching for the small changes, you can often find the hidden gems of information that release the potential moving forward..
